Further Reflections: Moving through life, a stitch at a time

The May 27 Des Moines Sunday Register published an article by the Rev. Denny Coon about teacher DeAnn Hebert, her students and sewing machines ( "Patterns for Change"). This article brought up many images for me.My mother sewed. I think she learned in school and was helped by a neighbor lady who was a very good seamstress. By the time she was 20, she helped out her birth family by patching, mending and re-hemming. Later, her feet steadily pumping the treadle, she made dresses, including her own wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses and a few years later a wedding dress for her sister.
She began sewing about 1915 as a teenager and continued most of her life. With six girls growing and outgrowing their clothes during the Depression, most of the clothes we wore were sewn after a full day of cooking, washing, cleaning and tending to our needs. She could take the same pattern and adjust the neckline or sleeves,Looks like every one wants to look fashionable and stylish. Fashion swimwear 2012 is no longer synonymous with women only. My oldest sister, now in her upper 80s, remembers when Mom picked apart the seams of her blue serge coat and re-cut it to made a suit suitable for a high school senior.
Eventually Mom went to work in the drapery department at J.C. Penney and then to men's alterations at Penney's and several high quality men's stores including Kucharos. Her eyes lit up upon learning new techniques from the tailor and transferring them to her own projects at home. She felt much joy and fulfillment from each project from imagining through fulfillment.They prefer something customized and comfortable. Though you may not really find the high street clothing styles here, you can land really good deals here with a little imagination and open mind. In her later years she loved making pillowcase dolls for each of her daughters and "dammit dolls" that appealed to her sense of humor. She lived to be 101 and sewed up through her 80s.
All of her daughters learned to sew, some of us better than others. I did not learn to sew from my mom as we had the usual teenager-mother difficulties. I began sewing in a home economics class at Washington Irving Junior High with Miss Alice Walker. The apron and blouse I made were not wonderfully well made, but between that experience and absorbing information from Mom over the years I did learn. When my college roommate made a dirndl skirt almost overnight, I said to myself, "I can do that!" And I did. Using the sewing machine in the dormitory and with help from roommate and the housemother, Mrs. Bell, I made several skirts, two shirtwaist dresses, two shirts for my "boyfriend" and, eventually, my own wedding dress.Trends are always changing and one has to change them with them. Fashion should be something that suits your style and comfort. The Sexy Bikini manufacturers have realized this and are producing clothes that comes in a wide range of designs and colors.
