Norfolk bridal shop to open soon in Suffolk

Where would you expect a veteran of big-city haute couture - the likes of Gianni Versace and Vera Wang - to open her next bridal boutique? Hilltop in Virginia Beach? Ghent in Norfolk? Greenbrier in Chesapeake?

Try downtown Suffolk. Maya Couture on Main is scheduled to open Tuesday at 147 N. Main St. in a former hobby shop that got several coats of paint, soft carpeting and shabby chic decor in soft grey and bright turquoise tones.

Maya Holihan, who took over Tiffanys Bridal in Norfolk almost a decade ago and turned it into Maya Couture Bridal Salon, said she never planned to add a second store. But every year, she ended up with a pile of sample gowns that designers discontinued, so she could no longer special-order them. Consignment stores allowed her to unload the stock and make back some money.

She and her general manager, Misty Prewitt, decided late last year that they could open a space to sell those unworn dresses. The off-the-rack concept allows brides on a budget to buy top-name gowns for a fraction of their regular prices, as well as order from a couple of lines.

"Now, someone who calls and says they can only spend $700" has a store full of options, Holihan said. "There are lots of brides who want to have the Maya Couture experience."
