New Mexico State University's Housing and Residential Life will host the fourth annual Cinderella Prom Dress Project from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on two consecutive Saturdays - April 21 and 28 - at Rhodes-Garrett-Hamiel halls, located at the corner of Jordan Street and University Avenue on the NMSU campus, said Cinderella Project coordinator Anna Cook.
The Cinderella Project, in conjunction with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, is made up of "a group of volunteers who collect and give new and gently used formal gowns free of charge. Our goal is to see that every girl receives the dress of her dreams, so she may feel more glamorous and confident than ever before," said Cook, who helped found the project in 2009.
"The event is for high school girls from the southwest region of New Mexico. "We have contacted high schools in Las Cruces, Deming, T or C, Chaparral and Ruidoso," said Cook. "We want to provide prom dresses to make their prom experience more special and more affordable."
Based on participation by girls during the first three years of the project, Cook said she hopes to donate at least 75 dresses for this year's proms. But, there is also a need for more girls who want and need dresses from the project. "We have a generous outpouring of dresses donated, but have a difficult time getting high school girls to attend. We reach out to the greater southwestern region of NM's surrounding high schools, but attendance is usually slow or late.
