What is the dress code?

It dawned on me that something that is missing from life that I remember from many years ago is a dress code. I cannot remember it being an issue in grade school, but it kind of picked up in high school. In my early days in the business world, most companies had dress codes. The larger the company the more rules there were. In most places, women wore dresses or skirts and men wore suits. It was kind of a slow operation as women started wearing pants suits and men worked their way into slacks and sports coats.I remember a frantic call from my boss telling me that one of the women in an office that I was responsible for was wearing a bowling shirt at work. How could I forget that the sponsor was "Clines Cleaners?" The guy that called me insisted that she be sent home, but I spoke to her supervisor and she found a sweater that the offender could wear to ease the tension.
Well, things gradually got looser. People started wearing just about anything they happened to have on. I remember getting on an elevator and there was a young lady with striped bibbed overhauls and a straw hat. I was prompted to ask her if she was going berry picking.
I suppose that some of the changes were brought about for financial reasons. I know that for many years buying suits was a steady drain on our household funds. When I retired, I had a closet full of them and strangely enough something about that dark space caused them to shrink.A few guys wear ties on special occasions. I think undertakers and lawyers are about the only ones you might see during daylight hours.
