Fall Clothing Drive draws nearly 1,500 vehicles

Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful (KNIB) volunteers accepted an estimated 28 tons of clothing, stuffed toys, soft luggage, linens, shoes and purses retrieved from 1,482 vehicles at nine area locations in Winnebago and Boone counties Sat., Oct. 13."Despite the rain and inclement weather, we were very pleased with the number of families who donated clothing and other soft goods," said Lori Gummow, executive director of KNIB.The actual weight total will be calculated after the items are sorted in Milwaukee and Chicago for worldwide redistribution in the United States and Third World countries."We appreciate the environmentally-conscious donors who help us keep items out of landfills which can be worn by others or recycled and otherwise reused," Gummow said.

One-hundred thirteen volunteers provided 363 hours of labor to staff the Fall Clothing Drive, held in the parking lots at six Hilander Food Stores in Roscoe, Cherry Valley and Rockford; the former Hilander site at North Main and Riverside, Rockford; the Logli Supermarket on North Alpine at Harlem Road in Loves Park; and Belvidere Township Building on Fairgrounds Road in Belvidere.They are designed to fulfill the needs and requirements of every type of customers.
